One day Narcissus bored decided to take a walk in the woods. As he was walking, he heard footsteps following him. He looked around but found no one. He walked on. This time too he heard the footsteps but he kept on walking and after a while looked back.
And shouted, “Who’s there?”
Echo as per her name and nature shouted back, “Who’s there?”
Echo, an Oread (mountain nymph) looked deep in his eyes. Her
eyes were brimming with love for him. The beauty of Narcissus has enchanted her.
She declared her love for him. And like a person who gets a thing so easily Narcissus
didn’t feel the greatness of love and rejected her straightforward. Echo fell
on his feet, begged for his love, and wetted his feet with her tears.
And Narcissus like a fool still did not accept her and moved
on. Echo’s heart was broken and she spent the rest of her life in the glens of
forest until nothing but an Echo remained of her.
Nemesis the God of revenge heard her story and decided to
make Narcissus feel the same pain as felt by Echo. She lured Narcissus to a
pool. There Narcissus saw his reflection and fell in love with it. He knew his
love is futile as he will never be able to get it.
He spent days and nights weeping by the side of pool,
immersed in his own image. His heart was broken. He could now feel the pain of
Echo. At last when the pain became so harsh for him to bear he drowned himself
into the pool and died.
